Today is a Swiss national holiday. Pentecost. Seriously? Also, I’ve finished the first year of my master’s!

It was a national holiday here too. So weird to have obscure Christian holidays off. Apparently, two weeks ago was Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt), which again I’ve never heard of before.

Yup, I had a day off of school on Ascension. But at least its got a name that gives a clue as to what it is. I still don’t know what Pentecost/Whit Monday is. I guess you can give obscure Christian holidays their national holiday due if you never have to give other people their important holidays off or celebrate such esteemed people as MLK and the US presidents.

So this is only tangentially related to previous comments, but I was astounded to read a little bit ago that Virginia combined MLK day with their Lee/Jackson day to have King/Lee/Jackson day. It’s only in the past couple years that they’ve split the holidays back apart.
