These are seeds of Phaseolus coccineus (= Scarlet Runner Bean). The white seeds are likely to flower white , the black and speckeled ones red. It is probably a mix between the white- and the red flowering coccineus and their crosses. On my website you can see different varieties of P. coccineus.

so weird to see this now - we lived on kibbutz nir david from 1987 to 1998
and are going back to visit for the first time end of july.
the weird part - we will first be spending a week in switzerland - with my high school friend in wildegg, and renting a car for a few days.

I liked the comment the best that correctly stated it was the Swiss Flag but then went on saying they should have used the 'american red cross' as if the Red Cross was an American invention - adding even more confusion.

No, according to my knowledge it's not toxic, just bitter. However, it is toxic to certain animals including horses and rabbits (not to dogs, I think). Plus there are other plants that are toxic and that have leaves that look alike: Lily of the Valley, Colchicum autumnale and Arum maculatum (see: http://www.botanikus.de/Heilpflanzen/Barlauch/barlauch.html). Best harvesting season is usually in March.

I would be interested to know whether by "no longer edible" you mean "taste bitter" or "are toxic."

Hi Jackie! Did you know the American Jewish Archives has several fellowship programs available to provide financial assistance to our researchers. If you plan on visiting us, I'd highly recommend sending in an application! We have several collections that would be useful in your research. Good luck!
